About M.J.

Hi! My name is M.J. Schwartz, and I’m the founder of Studio 138 Family Yoga and Mindfulness. My home base is currently Longmeadow, MA, but I work with clients all over the world.

I started practicing yoga and mindfulness when I was twelve years old, and I love sharing the gifts of these modalities with others. Over the years, my practice has evolved along with my life. I have five adult kids and step-kids, as well as two grandchildren, and my practice looks quite different now than it did during my own adolescence, through pregnancies and sleepless nights as a new parent, or during the years of balancing long work hours with family time and kids’ activities. My practice has been steady, but never static.

I came to Intuitive Eating later in life, after a long bout with chronic illness brought my food issues to the forefront of my consciousness. Intuitive Eating was such an integral part of my healing journey that I sought certification in the method. I wanted other people to experience the incredible relief and freedom I have found.

I have a B.A. in psychology from Smith College, where I studied perfectionism with one of the field's leading researchers. I also hold certifications in mindfulness, yoga, Intuitive Eating, and life coaching.

Prior to going back to school in midlife, I worked as a doula, childbirth educator, and midwife. I am delighted to be creating and teaching pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum classes that blend mindfulness practices with evidence-based information.

After graduating from Smith College with departmental honors in psychology, I decided to pursue coaching as a way of integrating the research-based, data driven information on perfectionism I had studied into a practice that would be easy to understand and integrate for folks without a background in psychology. As a recovering perfectionist myself, I have firsthand experience of how these practices can improve both physical and emotional health, contributing to a higher quality of life.

Outside of Studio 138, I am also an essayist and independent journalist. I experience writing as a powerful way to connect with myself, as well as with my clients, and the world at large. I also love spending time with my family, being in nature (especially by the ocean), hanging out with my dog, engaging in my own yoga and mindfulness practices, reading, cooking, and listening to music (both live and on vinyl).
